This month was a great month in terms of personal development because I’m feeling great about myself and what I’m doing. In terms of productivity it wasn’t fantastic, I’m still working on the discipline to sit down each day and do what needs to be done. Here are the details:
I fell off the bandwagon this month with my usual rhythm of publishing one blog post a week, I’ve only published one article in five weeks, although I was on holidays for two of those five weeks.
The traffic of the blog is doing well, I’m getting around 130 unique sessions each day from organic sources which is fantastic. It’s a little down from last month though which was 150 per day. Over the last three months the organic traffic to the blog has been increasing steadily:
The most recent post has done well, it has received around 1,350 unique pageviews so far. This is not as good as some of my other articles. Looking at the numbers I’m going to aim for 3,000 unique pageviews for each post, that will require a little bit more thought on how to promote the articles. Right now I publish my articles on LinkedIn, Twitter (although I could promote them more here), HackerNews, Reddit and Facebook, as well as notifying my list of subscribers. If anybody has any suggestions for other ways to promote articles I’d love to hear them.
If you’ve been reading the blog for a while you’ll know that a big goal of mine is to get blog subscribers. Having an email list will make future launches of products much easier, since I won’t have to start from zero with the marketing. At the beginning of November I had 64 subscribers to both blogs, I have 76 so far although we’re not at the end of November yet. My goal for November is 96 though (my previous month of 64 mulitplied by 1.5) so it’s not looking like I’m going to hit that this month. I need to optimize the popup subscription box in order to increase conversions.
Popup subscription box
A few months ago I added a popup subscription box to the site with the intention of increasing the conversion rate of readers to subscribers. Here’s what it looks like:
(if you actually do want to to receive an email each time I post a new article, use the box at the end of this article)
In the previous post I said that I’d share the conversion rates of the new popup, here’s a slide from my recent mastermind:
You can see that it’s not good at all, a conversion rate of 0.18 is hopeless! That means that for every 1000 people who read an article only 2 people sign up! After realizing that this conversion rate is so bad I’ve added some tasks to my todo list for this month to investigate why the popup is not doing well and try to improve it. I suspect that the popup is shown too early and people just close it as soon as it appears. Stay tuned, next month I’ll have more details to share.
The Last Three Lectures
A few months ago I launched my first course on Teachable. I did a whole launch sequence of 8 emails to my small email list and I got one purchase. However I still wanted to add at least three more lectures to the course. For the past two months I’ve had a task to finish those last three lectures but I haven’t been able to make myself do them. They are really weighing me down. When I finish the course I want to start experimenting with paid ads and using my blog to funnel people into the course but until I don’t want to start that until the last lectures are done, and making those last lectures seems like something that I really don’t want to do.
I’m reading The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy and it’s made me realize that the only way to succeed is to have the discipline to keep at it day after day, even if I don’t want to be doing it in that moment. So, I’m working on it. I feel like this is the cornerstone of everything else, if I can get this right then everything else will come. Top of my todo list is to finish the three lectures and I’m going to do it no matter what.
Passive income is stable at around 40€ per month. However now that I have the Teachable platform I am paying 39€ per month, so my net income for November will be around zero.
I’m doing well in terms of where I am. I’ve realized that I’ve been living a very good life over the past year or so because I work part time and I spend my free time trying to push my own projects forward, and I’ve even had the space to mess it up completely by not taking advantage of all my free time. I have a clear head, I can see that the discipline of just getting through my todo list whether I like it or not is one of the most important things I can give myself, without that I’m never going to get where I want to be. It might be easier said than done but it has to be done.
Goals for December
My goals for december are:
- Publish 1 blog post every Wednesday
- Get 10 sales of new course from paid ads (implies finishing the last three lectures)
- Build audience:
- 3500 twitter followers
- 96 total blog subscribers
By the way, the subscription box on this blog (my personal blog) was broken for a while, I’ve only recently fixed it. If you’re in doubt about whether or not you’re subscribed just re-subscribe.
See you next month!
